External Description

Reach beyond with Liberty IT; for this is where you'll find the super challenges, where you'll be given the scope and the support to go further, dig deeper and fly higher.

We won't stand over your shoulder. We won't get in your way. We certainly won't hold you back. You'll bring the expertise. We'll provide the platform to succeed.

Ready?

It's time to do your thing.

Build your data engineering capability with us

Join a team where software engineering and data engineering come together to solve complex business challenges at scale. This role is designed to give you meaningful opportunities to grow your data engineering skills in a supportive, hands-on environment.

You'll work with Python, AWS and Snowflake to build the data foundations that power pricing and modelling decisions across Liberty Mutual. Along the way, you'll develop practical experience in modern cloud data engineering, learn from experienced engineers, and build the confidence to take on increasingly complex data products and platforms.

Whether you're looking to deepen your existing data engineering expertise or broaden your software engineering experience into data, this is an opportunity to learn, experiment and progress your career in Data.

Experience and skills we need

  • Strong experience developing high-quality, scalable software solutions using Python
  • Experience building and managing data pipelines, data products, or analytical platforms in cloud environments
  • Strong understanding of data engineering fundamentals, including data modelling, data quality, governance, and optimisation
  • Experience working with AWS and cloud-native data technologies
  • Experience delivering solutions using Snowflake or similar enterprise data platforms
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining reliable, scalable data processing solutions
  • Experience working in agile software development teams and delivering production-ready software
  • Experience collaborating with data scientists, analysts, product owners, and business stakeholders to solve complex business challenges
  • A third level qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a STEM subject and 3+ years' software development experience in a commercial environment; or current and valid industry-recognised certifications and 5+ years' software development experience in a commercial environment

Experience and skills we'd love

We've included some further skills and experience that would be great. However, don't rule yourself out if you haven't had the opportunity to develop these yet. This role offers the support, learning and practical exposure to help you build them.

  • Experience with dbt, Databricks, Airflow, or similar modern data engineering technologies
  • Strong analytical SQL skills and experience optimising large-scale datasets
  • Experience building solutions that support machine learning, data science, or predictive modelling teams
  • Experience implementing data governance, compliance, and security controls within data platforms
  • Experience working with large-scale cloud data ecosystems and distributed processing technologies

What you'll be doing

  • Be part of a team transforming and delivering high-quality, scalable and compliant datasets that power insurance pricing and modelling capabilities
  • Build robust Python-based solutions that enable the efficient ingestion, transformation and delivery of business-critical data
  • Design, develop and maintain data pipelines and data products that support pricing, modelling and analytics teams
  • Work with AWS and Snowflake technologies to deliver secure, scalable and high-performing data solutions
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers, product partners and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver value
  • Ensure data quality, reliability and compliance through engineering best practices and automated testing
  • Contribute to the architecture and design of modern data platforms and services
  • Maintain and improve CI/CD processes and engineering standards across the team
  • Mentor and support other engineers while helping to raise technical standards and promote best practices
  • Assess emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve the data engineering ecosystem

Your Data upskilling opportunities

In this role, you'll be supported to build capability across the full data engineering lifecycle. You will have opportunities to:

  • Develop deeper expertise in Python for production-grade data engineering
  • Build hands-on experience with AWS, Snowflake and modern cloud-native data architectures
  • Strengthen your skills in data modelling, data quality, governance, security and optimisation
  • Learn and apply technologies such as dbt, Databricks, Airflow and distributed data processing tools
  • Improve your analytical SQL skills by working with large-scale datasets
  • Gain insight into how data products support pricing, modelling, analytics and machine learning
  • Learn from experienced engineers through pairing, mentoring, code reviews and collaborative design
  • Take ownership of increasingly complex stories, components and data products as your skills develop
  • Contribute to technical communities, continuous improvement and the evolution of our data engineering standards

You don't need to know every technology on day one. We value curiosity, problem-solving and a willingness to learn, and we'll help you turn those qualities into strong, practical Data engineering capability.
